I really enjoyed reading this book, finished it in two days. It was well written, easy ready, and kept me engaged the whole time. Didn't see the twist coming at all, very good story! I particularly think it's well-suited for the preteen-teenage audience. The one issue I had was with Abigail's romantic relationship. There aren't quite enough interactions between the two for the depth of their relationship to be believable to me as an adult. I would have really enjoyed having more from Christian's perspective. He seemed like a fascinating character, but I was always left wanting more from him. However, I doubt the target audience of young teenagers would notice or care. Definitely would recommend!

This is a great book with a completely original story. The author created a whole new world. I hope there is a sequel.
I read this book as part of a reading challenge. I needed a book based on a fairy tale. I enjoyed the book and would probably recommend it. Especially to someone younger.)
I loved the way the story developed! There were a few twists that I didn't expect. I felt immersed in the world the author created.
Fantastic writer, fantastic, creative and engaging tale. The beginning starts out a little slow, but just hold on, you will love it!
This book has a very nice plot, and though the writing at times feels labored and amateurish, it has a lot of potential. Despite that, this is not a book I would ever allow my daughters to read or recommend for any other girls. The gender roles in the book are pretty horrifying in this day and age. I understand that it is meant to be an old-fashioned imaginary world, so I ignored the way girls only inherit in the absence of boys. When a large part of school appeared to focus on girls learning to be graceful in their moments, I took it in stride. But here was my breaking point the young man Abigail first fancies begins their relationship by escorting her home against her wishes and insisting that she come to a party, even though she tells him no. And this is treated as fine, even charming. Later in the book, the young women are told that there will be a dance between their school and the boys', and that they will be asked to go by the boys. When Abigail, as a kindness to a friend, tells a boy that she would say yes if he would invite her, and he does, she is the pariah of the school when word gets out that she basically asked a boy to the dance. She is raked over the coals by the first boy for being so unladylike and forward. And again, this is a boy she has met a handful of times, yet she accepts his rebuke without question. She is horrified by her own forward behavior instead of questioning why it's so wrong for a girl to do the inviting, or why it's okay for some random boy to reprimand her.

One area where she could have shown some strength was when she entered the archery competition against the boys. I assumed she would triumph against their expectations. Know why she lost? Because when the competition required shooting a flying bird, she felt squeamish about it and *closed her eyes*. Because, you know, girls do stuff like that. But at least she got to hang out with the other girls and talk fashion! I wish I were kidding.

This is NOT the message I want my daughters to get from a book. The author's bio mentions that she admires the books of Gail Carson Levine. Those books have strong female protagonists who aren't afraid to be different. Abigail seems milquetoast and timid in comparison, though she is quick enough to overreact in what are perhaps meant to be humorous scenes but only make the reader concerned for Abigail's judgement.

I've read many books like this one, meant for young adults and set in a fairytale world. They don't need to be like this. These ideas aren't healthy ones for young women to normalize, and the positive reviews the book has received from others mean that they already have been normalized enough to go unnoticed by many.
Highly recommended. A very entertaining tale. It had elements of romance, danger, intrigue, mystery, drama, excitement, magic. I liked how the prologue introduced the main character and the significance of their name. The fairy land was very skilfully constructed and the romances nicely developed. An imaginative book you can escape with for a few very enjoyable hours.
I wasn't sure about this book at first. I started reading it and for some reason I just couldn't get myself to focus. I kept reading anyway until I realized I didn't want to stop reading it and I was hooked. Abby was a strong character and I really liked her. The part where Christian came to see her at her Grandfather's shop had me laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath. Too, too funny.
Very interesting story line and well told. I have to admit that Christian was too weak for my liking. Constantly having to promise not to do things that he keeps doing! Ugh..........hope he grows up in the sequel.
