The emotional prison that Max has found himself in is revealed through the lens of what happens in a cold, sometimes unforgiving world that is no less of a prison. The presentation makes the reader aware that we too, inhabit a similar world that can imprison us. As we see two roadside drunks measuring how they share a bottle by placing their thumbs on the wine level each time they pass the bottle, the connection that Max feels cannot help but touch the reader somehow, as we see how apparent trivial actions and details reveal deep-seated strongholds that we may, or may not, recognize and conquer. Don't buy this book to spread out over weeks. It's too hard to put down. And when you do put it down, some of the images presented may not be easily banished to the fiction world.Product details

A man's mental anguish and turmoil is reflected by his surroundings, the brutal beauty of Colorado mountains.
The story takes you for a ride in a man's thoughts, sometimes disturbing and violent, but sometimes reflective and beautiful, using the natural surroundings as a sounding board.
All together a very enjoyable thoughtful read.
Can a man ever really be free? This is one of the central questions posed by John Dalton’s wonderful novel, Toponas—a vivid, disturbing portrayal of a man haunted by a tragic, irreparable mistake. Seldom has the lonely grandeur of the Colorado high country been so beautifully described. Dalton is clearly a born writer, and some passages in Toponas are so lyrical and well crafted that I read them over and over again, just for the pleasure of doing so. Plot out some time for reading Toponas. As the suspense mounts, you won’t be able to put the book down until you’ve finished it.
I loved the ride this book gave me. How the author achieved this is a bit of a mystery to me. The writing is not ornate or overblown - it is written with restraint, and economy. The tale itself is deliberately and carefully told. The characters are picturesque, but still they are people you could meet on any given day, and the deeds done - with one exception - not exceptional. Still, I was swept along, I laughed, I cried, I became anxious, then fearful - and simply could not put the book down. I think this author is first class - he has the finesse, craft and power of a born writer. I don't think this book is perfect - but there is no mistaking the talent of John Dalton. I sincerely hope he continues to write - and post on . This book has whetted my appetite. I will buy and read anything Dalton authors. And I will enjoy watching him develop - it will be sheer pleasure experiencing his ascension. I recommend this book - highly!
